Moved again - and survived!

Even if you are "just" moving within a village, it's a gruelling experience. And it is an interminable one: You don't hire a professional removal company, since you only have to transport things over a mile, and in our case, you have nearly 2 months to do it. (redecoration of two houses included).
This blog is not about the hassles of moving, the trouble of finding space for things that have lived in your garages and cellars for many years - in a house that does not have either; about the incompetence of telecoms companies and Internet access providers, about the surprises of electric and water-pipes installations, etc., otherwise this entry might be 100 pages long.
Let us just state that the exercise kept me from writing this blog, and from photography in general.
Well not completely, as these images may prove.

A come-back after 4 months

You might have wondered what became of this blog. Well it fell afoul of moving house and other business. I apologise to those of you who came back regularly and did not find anything new.
You will see some images of our new environment shortly. (You don’t just walk around Provence and point your camera at postcard-scenery that has been photographed a few million times already.)
And I am still back in Paris and La Défense regularly, so the “usual” topics will come back every now and then.

Je ne peux pas résister à revenir à la Société Générale avec quelques photos de chantier.

Avec presque 5 MRD € de pertes dues à des transactions d’un seul « trader », il y a aujourd'hui certainement des chantiers un peu partout dans cette entreprise. Certainement dans son organisation et aussi dans son système d’information. Espérons que ces deux chantiers servent à remettre le client au centre des activités de la banque. La vie dans les trois tours risque d’engendrer une mentalité de « Wagenburg » où les gens se cantonnent à l'intérieur.
Le chantier de la nouvelle tour de la Société Générale devrait coûter des broutilles en comparaison avec ces chantiers. Jean Peyrelevade parlait dans une conférence en octobre dernier du prix de la refonte du système d’information du Crédit Lyonnais avec le but de mettre le client au centre (dans les années 1990) : environ 500 M€.

Depuis que les banques sont devenues des spéculateurs, la spéculation est devenue un « métier » avec un nom un peu sulfureux mais presque respectable. On parle donc de « trader » et insiste à expliquer que le nouveau métier sert à réduire les risques plutôt qu’à en créer.

Espérons que les architectes et les ingénieurs du bâtiment ont toujours gardé leur vrai métier et qu’il n’y avait pas de « trader » parmi ceux qui ont construit la troisième tour de la Société Générale, la « Tour Granite » (nomen est omen ?)

Pour ce sujet de la (re-) construction de la Société Générale, j’aime bien reprendre la toute première image de ce blog : La grue principale prend une forme d’insecte (« mais qu’est-ce qui a piqué la Société Générale ? ») ; le coté gauche du bâtiment de droite prend une allure de « dents de requin »…

Beyond the Grande Arche and the Renaissance Hotel you don't meet many visitors any more. Three "rounded squares": Place Ronde, Place de l'Hémicycle, Place de l'Ellipse, follow each other in the direct neighbourhood of the two half round towers of Société Générale.
I don't have a nice image of glass covered Place Ronde yet, so you will just get an idea of the two adjacent Places de l'Hémicycle et de l'Ellipse.
On week-ends both are completely deserted. While place de l'Ellipse is not really meant for the general public - there is nothing to invite you walk around or sit down - the emptiness of Place de l'Hémicycle with its benches and restaurant is quite spooky. I'll have to come back on a week-day. Nevertheless, the bold architecture of the place and the Société Générale building "towering" above it is quite striking.

The renewal of La Défense

The weeks before Easter were rather hectic and did not leave time for the blog. Apologies to all who dropped by and did not find anything new.
During this time I needed to go through my archives in preparation of a family celebration, and I finally found my "historic" images of the CNIT - from 1996. The only office tower to be seen behind the CNIT is Tour Sequoia, then still Tour Bull if I am not mistaken.
None of the Towers on the other side of the Boulevard Circulaire existed at that time. (Egée, currently Ernst&Young; Cèdre, currently Cegetel; etc.)

The next image is an extract of a larger one, showing a rather dull "real" view of the CNIT, and the statue "Le Grand Toscano" next to the Areva Tower (then called Tour Framatome). The reflection in the nearly black surface of this tower being the most interesting part of the image, I have extracted it here.

“Frühlingsdirigent”

The sculpture “Le Somnambule” by De Miller seems to be conducting a crescendo of blossoms coming out in early spring.
