On the way from Nice to Berlin in January. Only the snowy mountains show that we are in winter. Brilliant sunshine made a stark difference to the landing in wintery grey (and cold!) Berlin. (I spare you the images of dark-grey Berlin. For other images of Berlin, see here

Glass Waves at the Opéra de Paris

Waves

Glass Waves

Glaswellen

Ondes de verre

Architect Odile Decq, head of ODBC, has created a restaurant inside the Opéra Garnier in Paris - with the constraint of not touching pillars or ceilings, of remaining completely reversible, should the restaurant be closed at the end of its lease. (See here for the site of the restaurant "l'Opéra", and here for the Website of ODBC) Ondulationg glass walls weave around the pillars and provide very special reflecting surfaces.
The white mezzanine makes the reflections a bit awkward to catch; nevertheless, the results are unique and quite surprising: you seem to be seeing the Flatiron building transposed from New York to Paris. Also, the reflection drives a wedge though the vaulted ceiling, blending old and new, inside and outside - a degree of freedom reserved for the photographer whose substance of work is ephemeral.

Arcs - Tour Exaltis

Tour Total reflétée dans la tour Exaltis

Lichtbögen

Arcs of Light

Arcs de lumière

Tour Exaltis is a relatively late addition to La Défense (2006), designed by architects Bruno Willerval of Bridot-Willerval and Bernardo Fort-Brescia of Architectonica, and built by Bouygues. It houses the headquarters of Mazars.

Arcs of light extended to the pavementThe arcs of light are lighting strips in the interior of the big entrance hall. The architects have extended them onto the pavement outside the building, as you can see in this image (click to enlarge).

I have taken up that idea and “extended” the arcs of light into the surroundings, structuring the mirror images of la Défense, and blurring the distinction “inside – outside”.

The first image is closely cropped to the pedestrian level of La Défense, with Tour Total and Tour Areva framing the image left and right. The second shows the lower street level - with pedestrians, and the photographer in the lower left corner. (Contrary to Erich Kästner's proverbial saying that the photographer is never in the picture: "Merk's dir, du Schaf, weil's immer gilt: der Photograph ist nie auf'm Bild.")

Grande Arche et Société Générale reflétées dans la tour Exaltis Here we have two emblematic buildings of La Défense reflected in cascades in the concave structure of Tour Exaltis: La Grande Arche and one of the towers of Société Générale.

Berlin Reflections

Back to Berlin for a 4 day conference, with just the Nikon body and one lens (only one hand luggage! and the computer bag is the obligatory one on this trip), I try to redo some of the images taken 4 years ago with a little compact camera.
After the switch from summer time the previous night, I calculate that 4 pm would be a good time to be on location. Alas, I do not take into account Berlin's north-eastern geography, and light is fading from 3:30 pm onwards!
That results in a few nice (I hope) twilight images, but I have to return another time to get the images I am after. Construction work prevents me to get to the right spot, but I am rather pleased with some of the reflections.

On the way back to the government district, I pass by Neue Nationalgalerie

and "Legoland" at Potsdamer Platz

The afternoon light and the reflection make the geometry of Paul Löbe Haus and Marie-Elisabeth-Lüders-Haus soft but no longer fuzzy:

Soft Geometry "Soft Geometry"

Wege der Demokratie "Wege der Demokratie": Stairs, balconies and a bridge linking members of parliament and their staff to each other.

And then, there is Gehry! I did not think one could simply walk past the guard at the entrance of DZ Bank at Pariser Platz, but the guard even holds the door open for you. I had heard about the explosion of "Gehry-forms" behind the stern facade imposed by the city rules around Pariser Platz. But I did not expect this. Magnificent! The meeting room inside the "whale" inside the glass-roofed inner court (“under water”?).

Reflets - Réflexions

Continuing the series of exhibitions on this theme that has occupied my mind and my time for a number of years now, some of the recent images of Montparnasse (Paris) and New York will be exhibited for the first time. (See the posts below)

Nice in December

Nice, plage en décembreTaking the children to the ariport in Nice after their Christmas visit, there was not much time for photography. Just enough to catch this view of the beach along the Promenade des Anglais, showing that it is not empty even at this time of the year, and a few more mirror images to enrich the series "Reflets - Réflexions".

London - money and art

Paternoster Square, London

London - money and art
Londres - argent et art
London - Geld und Kunst

Extending a business trip left me with some time to visit an old friend in London and to walk around some of the areas that I knew well in the past. So I walked until blisters and an oncoming cold stopped me, catching some images for my reflection series. (And some more "touristy" ones, too)

The above photograph is from Paternoster Square, a huge commercial development, including the new London Stock Exchange, right next to St. Paul's Cathedral. One wonders whether, during the height of the financial crisis, bankers and investors went in procession through what used to be Paternoster Row, like the medieval clergy of St. Paul's, praying for better times...

Intérieur - Extérieur / Place de Vosges, Paris

Travelling to Paris on 30 August provided the chance to catch the last day of the Cartier-Bresson exhibition at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie. (It is still under "current exhibitions", but it will no doubt be moved from there soon: www.mep-fr.org)

Putting on Ferdinando Scianna ("La Géométrie et la Passion") at the same time, did not do him much good: Even though there were some masterpieces in his show, too (less than a handful), he clearly does not reach the level of Cartier-Bresson. Cartier-Bresson's "géometrie" is more elegant and seems completely effortless.

Coming out of the MEP (with queues even longer than when I went in - Cartier-Bresson still draws large crowds!), I strolled around Place des Vosges. Looking at the Galleries and shops, I was able to take another shot at my favourite theme of the moment: Reflections and "inside-out / outside-in". The bright sunshine projected the Place des Vosges into the Galleries and show cases, where it blended with the exhibited works.

Outside-in / inside-out

Extérieur - intérieur

As promised in the last posting, I come back to the topics of "inside-out / outside-in” and "museum and the city". These topics will probably keep my imagination busy for a while, and I will have to revisit places again and again, in order to refine my images and come closer to what I would like them to be.
Comments and proposals for improvements are very welcome.

Reflets - réflexions : Port d'Hyères

Port d'Hyères, soir

Spring, evening lights in the water
Printemps, la lumière du soir dans l'eau
Frühling, Abendlicht im Wasser

We are still back at 25 January, the same day we discovered the mimosas in full bloom. (See the posting before this one).
Ending the day with a coffee on the quay of the port of Hyères, I was able to chase a few more reflections in the water. The port of Hyères is rather "modern" and mostly devoid of charme. Nevertheless, the soft evening light and the palm-trees at the edge of the harbour basin made for a few nice images. At least I hope you agree they are nice.

Pyramide du Louvre - Ieoh Ming Pei no. 3

Réflexion et réalité Before returning to La Défense, let us look at yet another building by Ieoh Ming Pei
